That LCD is more then worth it. Especially on the Hero1's for navigating the menu.

This was my Heo1 with the LCD. Plus you can play back video and view the pictures on it too. :)

Did you get the hero3? Also, I highly recommend getting the lcd backpack. Worth every penny and makes setting up shots well worth it. Then again the hero3 does have the blue tooth/wifi so you could always set up your shot using your mobile device. I really want a hero3 really bad. LoL
