Updating an old post for whoever may be reading.... We had a get together that I didn't want to miss, and ran this gearcase 1 more time.... About 1/2 hr run time and it split open like a clam shell. Luckily the prop and shaft didn't eject, but it was toast. Note so self, have a look at the gearcase after every run, and if it looks bad, it's probably worse..

Lmao..... Ok, ok.... I get it! She'll be parked for a while! I need to put a roof on the house and take my ex wife to court though, so this may be a season ending injury for me :( and I was just starting to have some real fun with it too....

I can say for sure it wasn't water, at least since I've owned it. It's parked outside my bedroom, so if someone hit it that hard with a hammer, I'd know it. Someone stole my patio umbrella off my deck at 3am the other morning, never caught him/her, but I watched it happen... Anyways, think I'll be looking for a new lower unit. Shame, this one's had all kinds of work done to it :(

There's an O-ring behind that crack. If it's welded, the O-ring will be toast and water will get in. There's alot of loading on the prop shaft and you could very well have a catastrophic failure and lose the bottom half of your lower unit along with the prop. I wouldn't gamble running it. Look for another L/U with the right grar ratio.
Looks like it was stored trimmed UP over the winter and water froze in there.

It can be tig welded .Looks like someone hit it with a hammer maybe trying to steel you prop or something.I would sand alittle past the crack to make sure thats were the crack ends .A good welder will drill a hole at the end of the crack to stop the crack . Good luck

I wouldn't run it. That's a major failure, if it's all the through.

Drain the gear case oil. If the oil looks milky, then you need to break out the wrenches and to some diagnostics, if it doesn't look milky, take it to a mechanic, so he/she could tell you if it need replacing or maybe just to be welded by a welding shop. best of luck, alex
