Laser II Prop

Post: # 9466Post jacklake2003 »

I tested my new (used) laser II prop on the Viper today. It's a 24P on an old Merc 850. Top of prop hun was about an inch below bottom of pad. However, it seemed like the motor was too high. It got out of the water OK, but never really hooked up. 40mph at 6200 rpm (I know, I didn't leave it there for long) and a pretty big rooster tail. Any sugestions on set-up? I was going to lower it an inch or two and try again, however it will be a few days before I can get out again. Pics attached. - Chris

I d say the motor for that prop is too high, that prop is not a surface running prop, its a SS prop for all around stuff but not speed

You may be right. However, my only other experinece with boats like this is my Voodoo w/ a 70 OMC. It has a "Raker" prop and from what I can tell, it's the same as the Laser II. The Voodoo behaves pretty much the same. Throws a rooster tail for a bit, then "hooks up." The bow jumps up and the rooster tail goes away and you feel a thrust of acceleration. The Viper just can't get up on the "step." Oh, and the prop shaft on the Voodoo is about an incher higher than on this boat. It tops out at 60.

Sounds like bringing the engine down an inch or so wouldn't be a bad idea. Think your engine would be able to handle another 2 inches of pitch? Maybe a chopper 2?

If it is I would put a 20" motor (Or mid if ya wanna change it) and lower that motor a bit and start with the prop shaft about 2 inches below the pad without a low water pickup. That motor sitting so high could be some of the problem. But then again, what do I know, I havent even driven my boat yet. LoL
