Steering system, what to buy?

Post: # 661Post heloman »

I just bought a 89 Valero YT with a 96 merc 200, with several performance upgrades on the low time motor and all the normal upgrades. However, the steering is really tight, and after looking at it I'd like to replace the entire system. I've been searching around for all the info I can find and the consensus seems to be don’t use NFB, and opinions on hydraulic steering seems to be pretty much 50/50. So with that in mind and the expense, I'd rather not go with hydraulic steering. That leaves me looking for a non-NFB system which I haven’t even found, everything seems to be NFB. I e-mailed Teleflex and they were adamant that I go hydraulic due to the speeds the boat is capable of, or if I must go dual cable to use the 152 NFB system. Have the NFB systems gotten better? What should I get?

Welcome to the forum!
I just bought a vegas xt with a bad cable and switched to hydraulic 3 weeks ago and love it. I understand the price point I work at a dealer so I got by cheap but it took about 2 years to accumulate parts, good thing I'm a pack rat.

I've heard some don't like the feel of hydraulic but I started with it in the boat and it seams fine.

I was thinking of dual opposed steering in my viper if I ever get it done.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply Viper! I'm surprised at the lack of responses on this board, is there another forum that everyone goes to?

I think Teleflex makes a twin rack system for boats with power steering that'll fit. You do not want nfb with a v-pad boat. JMO

Yeah, teleflex is what i'm running, dual hydrualic steering. Great all around system and rocksolid on all out pad runs, reacts well to torque.
