Hydrostream AE21
Hydrostream AE21
Hi, I was wondering if you would be able to answer this question for me. I have a Hydrostream AE21 and want to put a 150HP mercury v6 2.0l on it. But i know these boats were rated for much higher HP's so my question is what speeds would i be able to achieve with this motor with the correct set up? Any help would be great thanks Dave

Re: Hydrostream AE21
With a light load I would guess 65 is possible. I'm guessing as I don't have a whole lot of experiences with that hull.

65-68, you going to need a lot of set back (12 inches) with a 2.0 150. A production weight HST or 21 don't run real well with small motors.

I have a ae-21 with a 225 yamaha and it runs 73 gps with 2 people,my buddy has same boat with a 200 merc and it runs 68 gps,the AE-21 needs at least 280 plus to work,i am putting on a 300 promax next spring,we tried setback with little change in speed,150 hp for that boat is way to small.

Re: Hydrostream AE21
the ae does not require 280 hp to fly properly, I'm was getting mid eighties with my excell, with a 14.5 /28" chopper hoping for 90 when I'm done with setup .long way to go though for sure, it takes going through the whole boat making sure your sponsons and center pad are flat without any hook, boat is dry, and you have the right amount of setback and propshaft height for your hull weight/ hp will make it run the way it should. I think 12 to 14" setback would be perfect for a 2 liter 150. well after some more testing I have come to this conclusion, you need 12 to 14" setback and the propshaft even to 1" plus above the pad and a big prop to get these things into hyperspace. I'm stuck at 8" back right now as I will need new steering and control cables to go back further.I moved my jack plate up on the transome so at full lift the prop shaft is even with the pad. trying a 14.5 by28" raker prop for all around use. I'll post how it works. the raker did'nt fit the yammi lower, the back of the prop rubbed on the carrier retainer ring. tried a solas scorpion 15 1/8" dia 27p prop though, new out of the box from John at Buckhorn prop shop, worked fantastic, did,nt blow out at even with the pad at 8" back 6200 rpm mid eighties with super strong acceleration in fairly calm water, more to be had, and 81.6 gps with a half tank and a passenger. I'm going to pick one up from John this winter.

Re: Hydrostream AE21
I now have much more seat time on my ae , and have 14" setback and can say first hand they like more setback, it flies earlier and you can run much less trim and carry weight much better, I run as high as 1.5" above the pad with 14" setback. The most speed I have seen is 85 mph though. I now agree with the above post, that you need big power to get 90 and above.
