jack plate question

Post: # 13214Post fla.viper »

i got this jack plate when i bought my viper. i am planning on replaceing the manual plate on the virage with it. i dont have a pump and was wondering if any pump from a hydrulic supply store would work, and how much psi it will need? ive also included a couple of pics of the viper with the new transom. iv got the core material, just haveing too much fun with the virage to even think about the viper.

i also read some where the stage 2 hull runs best with 8 inches of set back. this plate is only 5 1/2. would it be worth modifying it before i install it? is the extra 2 1/2 inches worth it?

Just install a setback bracket between the jack plate and the hull. I have a 10" setback (rapid jack) and a 4" hyd. lift behind it. Works great.

Hydraulic pressure is force over area, or weight you want to lift over square inch displacement of your hydraulic cylinder. Just figure out total weight of engine and related parts over cylinder displacement (pi R squared....), this will give you minimum psi needed to lift

Put an alpha trim pump on it and run it. Mine jacks faster than a Benz in Brooklyn.

thanks man, i see u got a 260 off shore on your hst. i have a 99 merc 250efi blue water on my fishing boat. the law made it not worth fishing off shore. i want to use this motor on my virage what kind of lower unit are u useing? my motor is so big i cant imagion it on the virage. this motor pushes my 1973 24' seabird 42 on gps with 5 adults bait, food, and tackle. im almost afraid to put it on a 18' tunnel.

I'm not real familiar with that motor, but if it is heavy, the more you set it back, the more it will want to swamp the boat..

I'm using a CLE with a Bobs Bigfoot. 1.87 gear.
