seastar hydraulic steering play

Post: # 17580Post YDOC462 »

i might have asked this before ................for those with teleflex seastar experience.......how much play should i have? i feel i have way to much for a hydraulic system. 1-3inches maybe?

ive bled it out 2 times. no play at motor.

thinking about bleeding down one more time, this time with the bow down (trailer tongue on ground) and running as much as i can through the system before sealing off.

any tips?

I've seen folks hang the oil bottle from the windshield ( up-side-down) with a cut out in the bottom and a clear tube from the ram bleeder into the bottle. Obviously the other end of the bottle is attached to the fill port in the helm.
This way , you can just keep turning the steering wheel in that direstion till there is no more bubbles. Swap hose to other side of ram and repeat turning wheel opposite direction.
Using this method, you keep a constant "push" with the oil so air bubbles can't settle back.

thats pretty much what i did this time ron. i filled a 2 liter bottle up and ran that much through both sides. motor is super tight.......cant budge it. ive found that the play is coming from the tilt linkage in the helm (teleflex sport tilt helm) the universal joint has about 1/8 to 1/4" play in it which translates into about 1/2-1" of play at wheel. might have to loose the tilt helm and go with a fixed seastar helm.

thanks for input
