Let's talk gears

Post: # 18741Post BQUICK »

I have Vking with 150 ProV Yamaha now. I'm putting a 225+ Excel on, it has stock lower unit with 1.81 gears. I also have 1.86 with Bob's cone and low water pickup.
The 150 has the ProV 2.00 gears and slightly better gearcase and slightly lower water pickup.

For top speed don't I want the 1.81 gears? Or does it not really matter....just run more pitch with 2.00 gears?

you can run bigger props for same result.... but when you get up to 30 + pitch props they are harder to find and mo expensive.

i have 2:1 gears on a 225 promax. im spinning a 29 7400-7500ish(with a weak powerhead) ill be changing to 1.87 gears once i get this rebuild complete to hopefully manage the rpms better.

cruise with the 1.81 gears, keep the 2:1 gears for playing around 800ft

So if I prop to say 6300 vs 5500-5800 can I go just as fast and get up to speed quicker? I'll have to snip my revlimiter....

I would say theoretically... yes. but I'm no expert. I would think you want to keep the rpm whatever range the motor makes its best power at. I.e. my promax is supposed to make best power around 6850 rpm. so that's where I'll be targeting. but I'm sure some mods you do to the engine could raise this rpm target.

play with the prop slip calculator in the knowledge section. this will give you some numbers to get started.
