Swapping Sportmaster to coned torquemaster

Post: # 23851Post alaskastreamin »

After talking with Ron Flood about my Virage / 280 not lifting like my older Virage / 260, he said it was my lower unit holding me back.
He was certain if I swapped my SM guts into a "big bearing" TM case and coned it, I would see an immediate difference.

His HST was a pig with a SM and he swapped out the case and the boat handled much differently.

With the lower raised as high as I run, I couldn't see enough in the water to be that noticeable.

The theory is a more streamline skeg and a longer gear case to width profile.
I will report back in May when we plan on going out again.

Notice the positive angle to the motor? I added 2" spacers and still needed positive trim to lift the bow.

ron....did u ever make the swap

ive ran a sporty on mine for last 3 years.....always felt it has held me back some even though ive modded the sporty case

slip numbers have always been high at fastest speeds

i feel the sporty digs with its pointy tip until it pops at high speed....im not able to run high prop shaft and still carry bow

i would like to do back to back runs 1 day with each....maybe this fall

I would love to see the outcome of this as well. I have heard a few guys say that SM wasn't a good fit with their Streams and they had better luck with a stock lower with a bobs cone with a lwp on it.

Hi guys.
I did run the coned case and didn’t get the results I was hoping for. Ron Flood still swears by this case and I believe him.
I was full on fuel when I was running so that might have been a factor. (30 gal belly tank). Also Ron Flood says my 15” mid has a 5” lower leverage point than the 20” motors.
Maybe more setback to compensate.
Planning on running some fuel out next time see how she does.
September sometime I will be back to test..

Yes, He is selling his Virage without the motor.
No racing for me. My Virage lives in eastern Washington.
There are two races up here that I know of, both in other towns. One is up north on one of the big rivers and the other is in Wrangall. I raced in Wrangall several years.
That one is a roundy round. Most of the smaller communities in the southern part are on islands with no road access to the mainland. Traveling to another town is expensive.

When I went to the Wrangall races, I stacked my 12' tunnel / 40 hp Evinrude on top of my 18' tunnel / 220 Merc Laser and put on the state ferry. Ran both classes.
Salt water is hard on nice boats so my Virage will live south on fresh water lakes and rivers.
