82 voyager prop

Post: # 24339Post Boatman383 »

Hey guys, Im new to the forum and I'm sure this question has been answered a 100 times but Im looking for some prop suggestions on my voyager. I am running a 98 supermag 225 2.5L with a sportmaster and a 6 inch setback manual jackplate. My current prop is a turbo lightning 24p 3 blade. Im getting around 62 mph but i can't off the top of my head remember the rpms im getting. I know the motor is supposed to spin 6500 but i know I'm not there. Sorry for the lack of information, it's been about a year since the boat hit the water. Im mostly looking for top end but would still like decent holeshot and the ability to take a buddy or 2 out with me

Im not a expert with the Voyager hull but with a 225 it should be going A LOT faster than 62 mph. Whats the set up? Set back, how high is the motor, does it have a cone with a low water pick up? A motor burried deep in the water will make for a slow boat and not able to get the RPMs out of it.

I have a 6 inch setback manual jackplate and the sportmaster lower unit has a nose cone and low water pick up. I belive the propshaft is about an inch or 2 before the bottom of the hull. The jackplate is all the way up but the motor can go up higher on the plate

Once you go even with, to above the pad with the lower you will be needing a surfacing prop, solid mounts and a water pressure gauge. I had good luck with the Lightening ET props. A chopper may work well also as you may be a bit heavier in the bow area than a closed bow 'Stream.
My Virage likes 1" above the pad and my Viper liked 1/2" above.

If stock, your Super Mag has LWP and solid mounts. Should be in the 80's. Mag has rev limit of 6750 and makes power to there. Once you get RPM's/prop figured out, there's more hp to be had. Other than ECU (limiter--send to Hoffman), plastic cage rod bearings (go metal), production rod bolts (go SVS or ARP), and oil injection. Dump the oil injection (unreliable) and go pre mix. Don't settle for anything less than high 70's.

I bought a Voyager (XT) with an almost new 225 Super Mag on it. The motor was sold right away because I couldn't afford it--but it ran 82-3. A 26 inch wheel at limiter yields 82 mph w/8% slip. Suggest 26 Hoss Hyperdrive, reworked 26 Merc big ear chopper, reworked 27 SRX.

Assume yours is a Voyager V hull. It would be good to talk to someone with a V hull--even a Vegas would be close. Not sure of the nuances between a V and an XT (which I'm familiar with). BTW, 24" prop at 6750 limit yields 76 mph (8% slip).
