I also cleaned all the wood off of the outer transom skin, i will post a couple pictures soon of that and will be open to advice. Some sanding gets done between things as well. Has anyone found a paint stripper that doesn't hurt the glass or original gel?

uprdate on the transom condition. i feel like i may have done a less than ideal job cutting it out. but i need to do my best to deal with it. i am thinking of making the transom height the same as stock for my tower of power, as it should put my cavitation plate just slightly higher than the pad. on my budget, heavy mods will be out of reach for quite some time. I was thinking about building the transom higher on the sides of the motor to keep swamping to a minimum. Will that make problems for steering or anything? Seems like a good idea in my head

Looks like you took pictures of my transom after last nights progress. I'm in the same place today. Bill

I gotta say, with your support here and knowing people are interested, I am having a lot of fun working on this thing. I enjoy posting and reading about boat projects and I am learning quite a bit from all of you. taking it step by step feels like a slow progress but when i look back at older pictures it is an amazing transformation. Cant wait to go the other way. :boating:

I have another idea/question.The plan is to use a thin layer of glass to slightly thicken the outer skin. then use foam core. then use carbon fiber for the inner skin, as well as wrapping the stringers. I was also advised that core board is a good light weight strong stringer material. Where can I find that? Is it a good material for the application? the idea is to keep the impact resistance of traditional glass on the outside, make use of a proper core and find some hull rigidity with the inner skin using carbon. is this a good idea? seems ideal to a newbie. I do realize this will hike the costs up, however it seems worth it to have a good boat for many years that will take anything I will ever throw at it. so good idea or bad?

I got some information regarding new epoxy resins associated with carbon not bonding with the old style poly resin. because of this, I GIVE UP. everything will be old school for the fiberglass. I will still choose foam core though. and will look into composite materials for stringers. half inch thick enough for stringers? Floor and transom will be the only wood in this boat if I have my way

I think i got about 30 pounds of paint off by now. So much dust every time i get on it... How do you guys bed in airex foam core? is the bedding compound/"glue" the same as balsa? where do you get it?? And what do you prefer? stringer on top of core? or stringer down first then core between? I was thinking stringer on top...
