I didn't physically look at the boat, just a ton of pics and talked to the guy a few times. He was a decent guy, put a lot of work into it. It's a nice boat, I just liked having the bigger motor and bigger prop. This is what a cleaver looks like...

Wouldn't a chopper prop have too much bow lift for a light 16 ft? I was thinking cleaver as well. Thoughts?

I definitely want to try a cleaver. When I put the jack plate on I still had the 30 on it, and any stab at the throttle at any speed would send the nose skyward. The 23 is too small, but it's more tame.

what would the advantage/ disadvantage of going to a larger pitch cleaver be?

As with any prop, the higher the pitch the further the theoretical travel per revolution.

My .02 on this....

A chopper or ET is where you want to be in the end unless ALL you want to do is top end solo runs. Cleavers are lazy out of the hole and do not carry weight well. I've run a dozen or so choppers on my boat, both small and big ear, and a handful of ET's as well. A well worked chopper will be your ticket for an all around prop, it will carry weight well, holeshot well, and lift the boat allowing you to run a more neutral trim (reducing a chance of a blowout). Until recently, I ran this prop below, a small ear 28P heavily worked by DAH which worked VERY well with the 2 liter/ 1.87 sporty....83mph @ 6400 with propshaft maybe a smidge above even. If you look at the 3rd pic, you'll see a fairly significant amount of cup over an out of the box chopper. (shameless plug - its for sale)

NOW, I will tell you this is no longer the prop for MY boat due to the increase in power and speed. When you start playing around well into the 90's, at least in a shovel-nosed hull like the Viper, you don't need, or want, the bow lift because the boat does it on its own at those speeds. I'm going to a 28-32P ET as every ET I've ever borrowed and previously run on the boat reduced prop torque at the wheel significantly over a chopper, allowed the boat to run flatter and higher, and gave the boat better manners all around.

I too want to try a cleaver to see where I end up on the big end, although if I bought one, it would be a limited-duty prop for me due to the characteristics I mentioned above. :up:
