Finding HIN #

Post: # 13923Post YDOC462 »

Well I had a lill scare this week. Went to start getting boat registered and title replaced. Got boat out of junk pile so didn't get title with it, thought no big deal, I'll just file for lost our stolen title. Well I ran into another problem. When I got the boat, the trans was already cut and the HIN was missing. Thought no big deal I'll just file for home made boat title and get new HIN assigned. Boy was I wrong!!!
When I called texas parks and wildlife to schedule a game warden inspection he pretty much told me I was f_ddd!!!
He said if I would have brought it up there for an inspection without aHIN, the could possibly cease it, if not cease it, not pass inspection. Said it happens all the time, people get old boat put all kinds of money in it and can't do anything with it. Guess how pissed I was.......
Got to digging doing through my pics of when I got the boat and found a pix of the TX #'s, called txpw acting like I was going to buy the boat and asked for boats HIN, guess what.....wouldnt give it to me. "Well ****" I said to myself.
So I went to txpw's website and dug around and found a link for boat owners query. Typed in TX # and wa la......previous owner name, last registered, make model hull andddd...........HIN! Info all for free. Why they couldn't tell me that I have no clue.

lesson learned for those first timers like me.

For those experienced ones who knew this....point your fingers and laugh.

p.s. Found out the boat is an 81 not 84.

I ran into that on the Vandal but all I had was the HIN number, I called txpw and they wouldn't tell me any thing but the lady I spoke with told me to go the the website and I would find everything I needed, sure enough I found the last registered owners name and tracked him down he lives up in Plano, tx and was very helpful in getting me the title and registration

Oh man I hear ya! I thought that since I work at a dealer it would be easy....wrong. The owner of my vegas is in prison and I got that one through a mechanics lean but he had 2 loans out on it, luckily they didn't want it. My viper also has a lean on it and the DNR couldn't give any info on the previous owner and it's not listed on MN's site. That one I got lucky and the last registered owner turned out to be a member of our race club, we didn't know it at the time. Now my vking I'm thinking of just not registering it since it won't be used as a lake boat at all.

I used to have the same prob but now I no all the ladys at the regestration office one inpaticalor who is always willing to go the extra mile to help me out . Not to many years ago they used to drive me nuts and I would leave pi$$ed off every time now I only go to Natalys line even if I have to wait longer or come back if shes not working . Are dnr used to be the same way intil I found Paul and he is another person who likes his job and is willing to help which is good since he has to inspect my boats for titles .It all depends on who you talk to alot of times if you dont get the anserw you want call back adifferent person well anserw the ? differently. Or like I do find that person that well help and allways go to them . I well be going through what you are in the near future the 77Viper i bought and the big floatila both dont have titles. Some time if you are redoing aboat and you rebuild a certain %of it you can just get a home made title .

Most, if not all Hydrostream hulls have the HIN written on a tape stripe, and glassed in to the underside of the deck somewhere. It's usually near the splash well. It will be covered in clear resin, and laid in while it's in the mold. Mine all have them. I don't know if it was for theft identification, or probably to keep things straight when they were being made.

I had a 1983 V-King back in like 1993. It had an aluminum tag with the HIN stamped on it, riveted in place where the HIN would normally be. I never took it off to see what was under there. The boat was junk, I killed it. The bottom flexed and leaked so bad you had to run the bilge constantly. I had a body shop then and my guy fixed it every other week...

My Venus has a full wrap around aluminum transom that goes over the splashwell. It covers the HIN. Ones like this I've seen in the past have had a cutout for it. I don't even know if mine has gel coat under it, as it looks like its set into, not on top of the transom. It is sealed in on the sides. It is brutally strong looking. I still have the HIN on the Coast Guard plate though, and the title, of course.
