Viper setup help. Need more speed .

Post: # 20452Post ViperMan »

So I gotta viper last fall. 115 mariner . Had some porposing problems after I hit 30 mph. Topped out at 55 mph but it was sketchy, Asked for help on here, ended up with a few sand bags up front, dropped my motor on the jack plate ( was as high as it could go , put to bottom) and I also put a phin on the motor. Took it out , and worked great , no more bouncing! But I top out now at 45mph. So I'm wondering what you guys suggest for me . What sort of things I should look at to go faster but still save , no bouncing . My jack plate is 6 inches. Not sure if that's a factor. Any help would be great , i live in Toronto, Ontario Canada . But my cottage, where I ride is up on chandos lake . 1 hour north of Peterborough . So if there's any places I could take my boat to at the end of the season maybe to get it setup ( if I can't do it myself) please let me know .
Thank you

There are a bunch of guys (including myself) in the Peterborough area that have the odd get together. We test props, setup, and just have a blast running the lakes. You're welcome to come out any time

Ok, and why do you know this will help?
I'm just asking because it would be a fair bit of work to get all this done and it made no improvement .

A 6" jack plate is WAY too much for a Viper. No more then a 4" for a Viper, with a 2" probably being ideal. And put the prop shaft even with the pad and go from there. If you do not have a low water pickup then raise your motor until you just start losing water pressure. But yes, that 6" plate on your Viper is hurting you. That is way to much set back for that little boat.

agreed with pete here... and my name is pete, too :)

see the raised transom on my viper below...

my viper has zero setback, bolted straight to the transom, and as in pete's pictures, my motor is raised... but not by a bolt-on plate. my viper itself has a raised transom.

when you guys talk about shaft even with pad, is that the lowest part of hull? just want to be on same page thanks.

does the height of the motor also help with stability at speed?
