1990 90H.P. Nissan Motor on a Viper?? good idea if price is
I have a friend who has a boat that has a bad transom and would sell his 1990 90hp nissan motor and controls to me for my viper. He hasnt said a specific price yet but it would most likely be a real reasonable deal. Hes a mechanic by trade and claims it ran real good last time he used it. Is it a good idea to buy this motor/controls if the price is right or should i not waste my time with a Nissan brand outboard for my viper? Any input would be greatly appreciated

If the price was right and it was a 20" motor then why not. If its a 25" motor I would pass on it as I dont think a 20" mid would be cheap or easy to find and plus a 25" mid would burry that prop in the water way to far. Just my .02 cents. Maybe someone else has an opinion too.

Nissan makes outboards?
The Viper is a performance boat and the Nissan will definitely limit you.
My advise is to be patient....another deal on an outboard always comes along.
The Vipers work great with older V4 OMCs, and inline Merc six cylinders. More difficult to balance would be the 2 liter Merc V6s. .... or go with a monster like Chet, aka Viper 77.
Have you seen these? ...and Welcome!

Re: 1990 90H.P. Nissan Motor on a Viper?? good idea if price
A 90hp will most likely get you somewhere in the high 40's if everything is right and the planets are aligned. If you're just wanting to get on the water and ride, and it can be had for cheap, then go for it, but realize that you need to keep some realistic expectations of the little guy. Otherwise try and track down a V4 115 or 140 and start the learning process if you haven't spent any time in a small pad-V boat. I would recommend sticking with an OMC or Merc, if for no other reason than parts availability. The most important piece of advice I can give you however, would be to do some searching around here and S&F about Hydrostream cores. There is an an abundance of posts out there involving accidents with boats that have come apart due to rotten and/or wet cores....and it makes for a really bad day.....albeit with much more speed and HP involved but nonetheless, they can still delaminate and come apart if the running surface becomes compromised. The guys here can help steer you right as far as what to look for. If your intent is to go fast, enjoy the process of learning to drive the boat with smaller power after all the obligatory core and rigging repairs/checks have been accomplished. THEN step into some horsepower and have some fun.
I ran a 115 X-flow V4 on mine for the first season when I bought it and it went 62-63 all day, after a complete recore I hung a stock 2.0 XR2 V6 on it, and went 83.7, and now with the warmed up 2.5 fish motor, it clicked off a 92.5 on its first pass before the water turned solid.
The quest will never end as long as you own it if theres a single "speed" bone in your body. Mine went from an old inexpensive boat to a, "its worth more than my truck" boat in less than 3 years. Now, while I'm gone for the year, its getting flipped and having the bottom sharpened up. Then its game on once again!!
Welcome to the forums!!

Jeff, is sure is nice to see you posting. That must mean you at least have a little down time.
Travis, if you are not going to replace the core that motor will work for now. If you put a bigger motor in it you will be going as fast as it will allow and that isn't a good idea with a unknown=bad core.

If it turns out to be a 25" could a jack plate fix that issue? Is a jack plate a good investment either way?

Re: 1990 90H.P. Nissan Motor on a Viper?? good idea if price
And i want something that does mid 40's for now and wont drain my wallet all summer... i might redo the core over next winter if i decide i want more power. For right now i dont want crazy speed, just a cool boat to cruise around in and catch some looks on the water with. Next year might mean new core/motor.... il see what my budget will allow when the time comes. When i get a final price il let u all know and il gladly hear your opinions on whether its worth it, or if i should just keep looking.
