need advice

Post: # 17181Post fla.viper »

i installed my lowerunit, and was disipointed with the water presuer. the old unit kept 7-12 psi depending on rpm. this one barely holds 2-5. after a while running it in the tank for a while, the pee hole stops flowing and steam starts coming out. i imedatly shut it down. the guy i got the lowerunit from swears he put a new waterpump in it. im not fimilar with the low water pick up. is this normal for a low water pick up in a tank with no water flow? i was hopeing to run it tommorrow, but i think im going to drop the lowerunit, and inspect the water pump in the moning. i had no cooling isues with the old unit. it all started tonite, when i tank tested it, i havent had it in the river yet. any advice is greatly apceated
tx, mike

You should be running at least 10 psi idling. If I was you I would replace entire water pump housing, gaskets and impeller, my dad had the same problem till he changed entire pump housing and impeller

Change the base too. Make sure the rubber seal is in the top of the water pump housing. Guy probably just put an impeller in it, which is a waste of time.

after removeing the lowerunit and inspecting his work, i found a waterpump housing bolt striped in the lower unit. he tried to fixit with jb weld. as an auto mechanic i know that **** is worthless. im off to find a heilo coil set and a complete waterpump assembely. i know there are many marinas open on sunday along the intercostal.

the helicoil seems to be holding. i took the waterpump assemebly out of my old one and put it in the new lower unit. the new one was missing the oring on the bottom of the pump. i now have 3-5 pis at idle, and up to 12 at 3000 rpm. going to let the batt charge for a while and go for a test drive. ill have to dress warm since its only 80 degrees in dayton to day. im not going to push it right away, but ill report what hapens latter. anybody know where to get to get a low water pickup flush muffs?
