87 Vegas Core Questions

Post: # 9023Post ACK880 »

I have a couple questions about the core of my Vegas. I have discovered that the back 4' of the v portion of my hull's core is pretty bad. It basically starts where the hull steps. I have that already cleaned out and ready to recore. My question is regarding the pad. I have not taken any samples, it appears to be very solid and I didn't want to have to tear out more than needed. Is the pad also balsa cored? And if so how thick? I have done work in checkmates but this is my first hydro.

The pad is cored with 1/2" bulsa. Is it a v or xt bottom?

Hate to be the guy with the bad news but assume it's bad and get it out. I don't know the years, Chet can better explain but the XT's were known to be bad. If you have rot in back you probably have more rot. If so don't be afraid to do it right. The piece of mind of knowing outweighs the time and cost. If you love the boat, you will like it more when it's lighter weight. Love to see what it looks like. Post some pictures of both the outside and anywhere the floor is up. After doing a core. you can tell pretty much from a photo where the dark spots are. Bill

Bill is correct about the piece of mind knowing all the core is good and dry.

I'm not so sure about the tx's but have heard the build quality wasn't the best on the yt's from 87-89.
