Motor how much is too much weight for a motor.

Post: # 22039Post Bob Roseville MN »

Ive seen it done before, we the few of us have done it. Over 225hp
But this time i want to go all out.
Who has pushed it to the breaking point?
How many pounds is to big for a Viking
Let me know what works and what doesnt?
Im looking to put a 510lbs motor on a Viking
Front gas tank for counter weight maybe a few other parts or rigging in the bow?
Can you make the boat have more buoyancy? Spray foem options?
Im going to test it no matter what im told.
No hot air post a picture .
Thanks Bobby

Hope your transom is new.
Probably want it thicker than the standard 1.5 inches.
Knees tied into the stringers would help also.

gas tank in front isn't best idea. As you consume fuel, the weight diminishes and can affect handling.
sprayfoam can absorb water, so you'd need to seal it somehow.
some people inflate an innertube and stick it under the deck in case of blowover for added buoyancy.

A TON of hydrostreams have been powered with will over a 225 with the 1.5 inch thick transom. How about Chet with his nasty little 300+hp 15' viper. The foam, dont.... Wont do you any good (unless you sink it) and will soak up water over time. Im putting a 235 on my Vulture and the transom is no different than the vking. Lots of guys are running 260s and stuff.

Are you redoing the core, stringers, transom, and all that stuff or has it been done already?

True Hippie,

But Chet's 330hp is due to NOS. His engine is still a 2.4 200 that only weighs 400 lbs.

This is just my opinion. A 500+lb motor is a **** tonne of weight, and I wouldn't want to hang that off a transom that's 25+ years old.

I dont know how heavy a 200hp merc is but I can tell you, I have seen a heck of a lot more power than a 200 on a vking many many times. I see 200+ on Vipers and Vectors. Pretty sure your 200 will be just fine on a Vking.

the front fuel tank to me is a NO NO....cause as the tank level goes down everything up front changes..plus you have fuel moving around

You DID say only replies with photos?? Correct?

Don't worry, you'll go fast. Ambulance drivers usually step on it for trauma cases.
