prop selection 101

Post: # 5237Post Edseler8 »

I have a bone stock 115 Avidon Johnson on a 78 Viper. At 5500 rpm boat will run mid50's. Prop is 13x19. I pull kids on skis and have good hole shot. Want a bit more top end for cruising. Motor is not on a Jack plate or set back. Fixed position is 3/4 inch up from transom. Thanks.

Guys, Sorry about the typo - Not an Avidon but a V-4 Johnson.

idk what that motor should be at for WOT rpms but try a bigger prop for ex maybe a 22" pitch see what you turn for rpms then and what it does for your speed...
really depends on what you want to do with the boat

yes and you're gonna have to raise your motor
right now it's set up for full power no top end
try raising it as high as it will go, a lift would help even a manual if you're gonna take your motor off anyway
then just switch props for wat you want to do
i have a V6 i run a 26 chopper, but for skiing i have to put the 19 pitch aluminum prop on

I can move the motor up a couple of inches and stay in the mount bolt pattern. Any thoughts on prop blade type. I ran a Michigan prop with chopper blades and it didn't seem to improve performance. It was a 13 x 21. I have looked at some 4 blade....ant feedback on the effects on a streamer.

a couple of inches ?
do u have it on the lowest hole ?
put it the highest it'll go without the lift,
you may find one in the meantime
and go from there,
you'll find a huge gain just raising your motor

I will get the motor up as high as possible without any addtional holes in the transom. I will take some pics with something other than phone and try to share. Thanks for the feedback!
