What kind of Wood For Rear Seat?

Post: # 13478Post triumph3434 »

1990 Verado. Needs a new rear seat. Back and Bottom. I am starting with nothing. I found the Dimensions someone else had posted, and am going to make the adjustments for the Verado. They Measurements look almost the same. That being said, I don't know where to start...

What kind of Wood do I use? What do I coat it with?

Once the wood is done, How do I do foam? Or do I just give it to the upholstery place and they will do it? Give them a picture and let em have at it?What kind of Foam do you use?

Also, If anyone has any pictures of the back seat they want to post that would be helpful. Anything youve got. How they sit together, how they attach, where the ends sit on the floor.. etc... I could use tons of pics.

I would use marine grade plywood coated with resin and then send it to a upholstery shop. I just don't have the talent to do that sort of work plus they have the correct materials.

Ok, What exactly is Maring Grade Plywood? Is this the same as Exterior Grade? What do I ask for at the lumber yard?

About the Resin, What exactly is it called? Do I just paint it on? Can I get it at a boat shop? Home Depot?

Yeah the lumber yard will know what you want when you tell them marine plywood. You can do a simple wrap with vinyl and foam on your own but if you want it to have patterns and things send it out unless you have access to a really good sewing machine.

Marine grade plywood is made with water proof glue. You can also go with a Fur AB (Water resistant glue) but either way, make sure to seal em up good with resin so water can not get in.

Not all lumber yards will carry it but ask around, You will find it. I know Home Dept and Menards does not carry it around me. I had to goto an actual lumber supply place. I used AB in my vulture and that was right around $70 for a 4x8 sheet. The Marine was closer to $100 a sheet.

And unless your good and sewing and stuff, Just make the frame and take it in and have someone do it. Good luck. :)

Yea, I dont plan on doing the Uphoulstry, I just didnt know If they did foam and all too. I will find the marine plywood. How about the Resin, do you think the boat store will have it? Or Home Depot? Is it just called Boat Resin or Fiberglass Resin, or Plywood Resin? And is it a can like paint?

Also, for the Plywood, 1/2", 3/8"??

Express composites will have everything you need. several guys on here buy from them and will probably send you that way as well. Just a fiber glass polyester resin will do.

You can find them on google, sorry I dint have# at the moment

I've tried to use 3m resin from auto store and hated it. Wouldn't recommend that

Great, Looks like a good site. I will call them tomorrow and order some. Thanks for the help.

If anyone has some pics of their back seat, I would love to see them. Especially how they open, and the overhang on the bottom, and where the bottom meets the side of the boat. The underside of the bottom, etc. Thanks for any help. I will take pics and post as I go about the Seat building.

Also, to attach the Deices of Plywood. Do I use Screws and a certain type of Glue? What kind of Screw? Does it need to be the Stainless ones?

Do I need to put Resin Between the joints or is that overkill. In other words, DO I resin Each piece and then assemble, or assemble then resin..
