Re: What kind of Wood For Rear Seat?
Marine grade plywood stainlees screws both can be purchased at menards the screws I found to work the best are square drive finish screws very slender so they wont blow out the sides of the ply .

Rut, your lucky if Menards by you have Maine ply. I must usage tried 4 Menards and 3 or 4 Home Depots around me an not one of them carried it. I ended up going to a lumber yard just down the road from Express and they had exactly what I wanted and tons of it.

Express recommended that I use Gelcoat to seal it.
Do you all think I should add a layer of Matt, or is the 1/2" plywood strong enough? The original had no Mat right?
I found a lumber yard in my area that has the Marine Grade in Stock.

Oh, so do you think the gelcoat recommendation is good, or just a layer of the Fiberglass resin? I can get the all purpose fiberglass resin at Home Depot. Do I just paint it on?

One more option to consider is having the upholstery shop make the frame. Worth getting a price.
I go wayyyyy overboard with wood products in a boat, but,..................if you think about it,..............The factory didn't coat the wood in most cases and it lasted several years usually in conditions we wouldn't dream of.
I'm just saying, do the best you can and it will be better than new.
Oh yea, one more thing. Router or sand a slight radius on the edges of the frame. Vinyl doesn't like super tight bends.

Re: What kind of Wood For Rear Seat?
I will coat with Resin for sure, but not gonna do the gelcoat.
Anyone wanna take some pics of their seat for me?
Ive got images from this post: http://www.hydrostreamforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=793
But... I still have some questions. The back, how does the 1" bar slide in? Wouldnt the Center Brace for the Bottom Frame prevent it from going under the frame bar? Or does it just sit in front of that bar. Or is there a gap that I just cant see in the pic?
The seat bottom. If the base is 36" in rear, and the seat is 55", dosnt the rear and far sides sag? Or does it just sit on the Floor? Or is there a " rear foot" on the Seat bottom that isnt mentioned.
How far tot he sides does the seat go? (I know 55" but my boat is a little wider than the viper, so I will have to make it bigger) Just want a reference pic that shows the seat in relation to the sides.
Anyways, if someone wanted to take a TON of pics and send them that would be amazing. Especially, the underside, and how they connect, and all angles of all positions, Open, Closed, Bottom open, back on, Bottom on, Back off, etc etc.
Thanks guys.

Re: What kind of Wood For Rear Seat?
When the Bottom Seat is Down, sitting on the frame, where does the Wood part of the Seat end? How far back from the Rear of the Frame? How far does it Protrude over the front of the frame?
How thick is the Foam at the Thin part of the Seat and Back, and how thick is the Foam at the thick part?

Re: What kind of Wood For Rear Seat?
Previously....."That little 1 x 1 on the bottom of the seat back hooks into the inside back of the base. When the seat bottom is in place, it locks it all together. ...pretty good to be so simple. "
When the seat bottom is down, it keeps the seat back from going forward, the frame keeps it from moving back.
Yes, the seat cushion overlaps forward. Probably be best to build the base and then locate just where to put hinge at that point.
One more thing...If you've never had boat seats upholstered before...well, you might be in for an adventure. Be sure you ask for high density foam. The regular stuff just doesn't get the job done for boat seats.
