Yet Another 79 V-KIng Restore...Yea...I Know-Do We Need Another One??

Have questions about fiberglass, gel-coat, or core repairs well as composite questions?

That cheap pink foam in 4x8 sheets is what I used to mock up the stringers and stuff in mine. Works awesome so you dont ruin a good piece of wood by cutting something wrong. As for the front bulkhead/air box, mine got put back in and made strictly from fiberglass. No wood so it doesnt weigh nothing and is strong as heck. Also, made for a great spot for my foot throttle mount pad. But yeah, while you dont really need to put the whole air box in, you will need some sort of bulk head for sure but the full box will just give it that much more support. And if you do put your battery up front, it will be a good mounting spot. :)

Looking awesome so far.

Hey Bud

Couple things I noticed.

The stringers should bear against the finished transom not the outer skin.
I round over the top edges of the stringers so the fiberglass can roll over without puckering.

The foam you are using looks like polystyrene. If it is, unfortunately, it doesn't have the density for structural supports. You shouldn't be able to crush it by pinching it. Also fiberglass resin will melt it. Epoxy won't hurt it though.

I have used this type of foam for non structural projects. I would use it just for the shape and would spray glue tin foil to isolate the exposed foam from the resin. Also rolling a coat of latex house paint will create a barrier to fiberglass to.

You would have to add so much fiberglass over polystyrene foam to be structural, that it wouldn't be practical.

Ron, i think he's using the foam panels to do a mockup of the wood he'll need to cut for stringers/braces/bulkheads.
This way you can easily "mold" the foam to the contour of the hull and cut the plywood to same shape as needed. Beats ruining a $150+ sheet of marine-grade plywood.

It's been a while since my last update...

Bought all my glassing supplies from UScomposites, 635 thin set epoxy 3:1 Medium 12 gallons (9 resin+3 hardener), 11 lbs. milled fibers, 3 gallon pail of Cab o sil, 25 yd roll of 4" belt 1.5 oz CSM, 25 yd roll of 50" wide 1708.

Corelite board 28lb. density 2- 4x8 sheets 1/2" thick.
6 sheets of 1/2" DivinyCell core material 32"x48", scrim backed and scored.

Not sure exactly how many grinding disks and wheels from Lowes. 36 and 24 grit.
2- Tyvec suits.

Undisclosed amount of Beer... :D

Got the boat fully gutted and ground out, save for a small area up front I will do before the core goes in. The little dark spots in the hull are leaves that blew in while it was drying out in the sun after a grinding and washing out session.

So next I made my transom plug to be glassed into the boat, then glassed it in place.
I cut the first Corelite panel into 4 pieces, 39"x17" in size, then stacked them, clamped them together, then marked and drilled 1/8" holes every 2" all across the board stack. This was to allow trapped air in the glass layers between each panel to escape when compressed to cure out. It was suggested to me by another member, and worked perfectly. All kinds of bubbles and resin oozed out under pressure!

I used 2 layers of 1708 with the CSM sides facing the Corelite board between each layer of board.
This used a little over 2 quarts of mixed epoxy resin. The final transom plug sanded and ready for install ended up weighing 34 lbs. The finished thickness installed will be just under 3" with another 2 layers of 1708 to cover the transom completely in the boat extending out past the transom to the sides and floor by about a foot or so, to complete the transom.

Next I glassed the transom plug into the boat with 2 layers 1708 between the plug and the hull skin, again CSM facing the skin, and the other facing the plug.
Then had pre drilled holes and bolts, clamps etc... set up to clamp it in place. Made peanut butter thickness putty to fill the open areas trying to fare it in after install. Still have some faring left to do before the final covering layer goes over it all.

Did find that using bakers parchment paper under and over things being epoxied that you didn't want stuck to something else works well. Epoxy will not stick to it.

Must say I love this epoxy over poly for ease of use, and clean up is a snap with cheap rubbing alcohol. Also almost Zero Odors !!!
Did all this in my basement, then rolled it out into the sun to aid in setting it up and curing!!

Got the base layer of glass in that the core will set on.
Then once the core is down, will cover it with another layer of glass, doubling over in the pad area.
Have rough cut my stringers from the Corelite panels.

Changed up the design of the stringers a bit and copied the basic layout from a member that has a factory Comp V-King. He was nice enough to send me pictures and measurements. Thank You Bob!

I did lay the glass for under the core in one big piece. And will do the same to cover the core.

More to follow as progress moves forward!
