Primer???

Post: # 284Post jacklake2003 »

Ok, after reading other post, I have also decided I will gel my viper instead of painting it. I will be adding the Duratec addative to the gel. My question is, do I have to prime the boat first just like I was using paint or can I gel over the old sanded gel coat.
Thanks

Spraying gel is not all that simple. Gel, by itself, will not completely harden, even with a catylist. Also, gel is not self leveling. It will need to be wet sanded and buffed to look good.

Well, I sprayed the bottom of my Viper with white Gel and Duratec in a 2.0mm HVLP gun. It came out great! no primer. I did have to wet sand and buff, but I was very happy with the application. I have never used a spray gun before. Next is the top half. I'll keep you posted!

I heard primer will bleed through even when it dry. I would go right over the old gel. Paint can even go over jel and turn out great... just ask king gill.......... his boat is sweet. Paint over gel.

Primer is not needed. I shot the bottom of my 78 vking with gel. I mixed regular white gel with wax additive, catalyst, duraclear for shine, and thinned the mix down with medium temperature lacquer thinner. I prepped the hull buy sanding the old gel down with 80grit. Then shot 3 or 4 heavy coats. After a few days of drying i wet sanded the hull with 400, then 600, then polished it using 3M's fiberglass polish.
