Re: HELP!! What am i looking at??
What about doing it all fiberglass? More expensive? Just as strong? How much heavier?

Re: HELP!! What am i looking at??
It would probably cost a little more to do it that way with the extra resin and fiberglass. The balsa is $25 for a 2'x3' section you will use about 7 of them.

Figure 10 gallons of resin, 15 yards of 1.5oz csm=mat 10 yards of 1708=stichmat That is a short major list if you want I can spend a little more time on a better one to give you a better idea.

Re: HELP!! What am i looking at??
Before you do that i have a somewhat major question, is this all worth it? Is this boat worth spending up to $1500 to make it strong again? Like will it have any resale value because of that or is it just i do it for me kinda thing? I know i can afford a recore if i have do, and work on it slowly. But it basicly will mean i wont be on the water until late summer at soonest, maybe even next year....i have a limited budget compared to most other hydrostream owners. I do really like this boat, and hydrostreams in general. So if you all think its a good idea i will probably redo the core. But i wont be able to get a motor for quite a while after paying for the recore.

Hello and welcome to the club I'm in the middle of a Viper recore the anwser is yes your boat well be worth more at resale time if you do core right and document it for proof take pics. I have roughly 6-7hr in taken core out and all I used was a chisel and a hammer for the most part it comes out easy but be carfule right below steering wheel the boat starts to make a curve there. Good luck.

What is a rough idea of what my '79 viper would be worth (no motor) with a new core and decent interior and paint?

Re: HELP!! What am i looking at??
Yes your efforts will be returned if core is replaced.I looked for my hydrostream for a year to find with new core and also had to drive 15hrs total, cross US/Canada border. But worth every minute. It's not just a boat it's a cult!

Re: HELP!! What am i looking at??
It's worth what someone is willing to pay.
Unfortunately, the majority of folks that fall in love with the lines of a Hydrostream on Craigslist for $2500- $3500 turn key have NO idea there is a core and it's most likely rotten. They think the floor is the core and swear it's solid.
Both Chet and I have recored our Vipers properly and documented our recore jobs. Now that we're both selling our boats (Chet, did yours sell?) it's an educational process so buyers will understand why our boats are gonna cost you more to own.
If you have the patience and know-how to recore your boat, do a CLEAN job, you should be alright.
I put mine on E-Bay a few months ago. Fully rigged (ALL BRAND NEW: core ($2000.00), interior ($1000.00), gauges ($300.00), foot throttle ($100.00), seaStar PRO hyd steering ($1200.00), hyd jack plate ($850.00), alum gas tank $300.00), bilge pump ($50.00), etc) without motor and the bidding only went to $2300.00. That's roughly $5800.00!!! I won't sell for less than $5500.00. Pretty good deal when you break it down. That's like getting the boat/ trailer and all labor for free!!!
$8500.00 with motor (2.5L 200 Merc with LWP, solid mounts, and fiberglass 260 cowl).
