98 rude dies in rev

Post: # 15189Post Rut311969 »

Well guys I got my 98 200 evinrude out of storage and rigged it on a boat only to find it needed a cdi so i put one on it went thru the carbs and it runs great on top end but is alittle doggy on bottum end but only for a second and then off you go . But here is the kicker when you put it in reverse it falls on its face but if you push the choke in when you engage it in to reverse it well run fine any ideas :?: the carbs have been gone through twice . This motor ran great before I put it in storage it has 135 psi across the cylinders .

When you say the carbs have been gone through, do you mean cleaned, adjusted, or both? If it works better when you choke it, doesn't that mean it's running way lean?

Gear change in reverse binding with throttle/timing linkage? Just trying to keep it simple, since you say it's worst when you hit reverse. I don't actually know what the linkages look like in your setup, just throwing it out there...

the carbs running in forward will run good in reverse either or sounds like to me maybe the idle stabilezer if its still on it or the timing and do u have a hot foot or the throttle on the control box if so that coulb be out of adjust for gear to throttle ratio gl with it and get a merc lol

Well check out linkage as this is not the throttle set up that was onit before it is a hand throttle and Merc man this motor is being sold so I can work on my 350mag so selling rude to fix merc :| .I have had them all and there all good motors just dependx on the app same with 4wheelers and dirt bikes some just shine alittle better in certian areas but the big 4 all make good stuff . Thanks for all input guys as it give food for thought and it could be the linkage and I didnt even think off that .

Check your shift interrupter switch. Sounds like it's sticking which drops three cylinders.
