Had a nice run today with the HST

Post: # 14741Post rev.ronnie »

I went down to Forest Lake to try out a Mazco 28 RE 4 I bought from Keane on S&F.

First pass, full load of fuel, less than 8000 rpm and I clicked it at exactly 100 on GPS. She was pulling plenty good, but I was running into a bay and the wind was pretty strong. I am still rich on the ACU, but I will play with that later.

The prop lifts really well and I was able to run my motor height way higher than with any other prop. I was not expecting this to be a huge top ender, but rather a mid range prop. Needless to say, I'm pretty happy. I dropped it off at the prop shop for a new hub on the way home. It is a little loose and I'm going to reface the thrust surface too.

I made some easy 95 mph runs and packed it for home. I am still going to find a nice Hoss triton 28 to see what the top end really is on this rig. I may just buy a new one, I think it will be money well spent.

Sounds like a good day Ron. I have a Steve Smith 30 offshore if you want to give it a try sometime, the viper likes it but I haven't tried anything much over 100 with it.

Yeah, I'd like to spin that once. I have a Merc 26 chopper I may have Steve do an offshore cut on for a drag prop.

How well does it lift?

They are similar to a "Hoss" cut.

I see that Hoss' are on sale right now. I'm probably gonna get a new one. Those things are bad ***.

Thanks Rev., I have a 26 hoss similar to the one on s&f but not that nice. It's from the early 80s and used for the 200hp drag, also it was worked on by Hopkins propeller in Covington, louisanna. When I get home I'll post a pic of it and y'all can tell me if it offshore cut or not, thanks again

What motor, gear ratio and rpm were you running? What mph?

I think a 30 may be a little much for all but the lightest load on mine.

Stepped on 260 or 2.5 drag.. clicked off 8900 with the drag motor, 1.87 gears. It got with the program. It worked great on all motors until a broken propshaft sent it to 45-50 ft of water.
One thing I found out while doinking around with top ending my HST runs much more happy when the motors are propped well within the motors power band instead of screaming them. I have'nt ran that set up in years, before it goes to whomever for a cosmetic restore the go-pros will be strapped to it for a final blast. Something about those tritons is magic.

Yeah, I never spin mine real hard. 8000 maybe a touch more. I like to keep the motor loaded.i may try Chet's 30 if I get a chance this year.
