Glastron GT-150 - Hull mods to make it handle 150 HP

Post: # 24573Post alaskastreamin »

I picked up this mint GT-150 w/ ‘82 80 HP merc in My home town in Alaska a few weeks ago. I really miss my Virage and going fast when I’m up here working, so hopefully I can make this boat handle like my Viper. Ironically, fellow Hydrostream owner and friend Phil Blomquist was in Sitka visiting when the deal went thru and was super eager to go see it.

First off I had to replace the stator, trigger, and coil wiring as the wires were rotted. I also went thru the carbs, fuel pump and replaced all the hoses.

I pulled the deck and reinforced the transom before my first run. All the wood was in excellent condition.

My image hosting (free) site has closed down so this is my first attempt at uploading pictures directly . I hope they load in the right order......

The first time out was ,.....actually FUN with the little 80 Merc. I at cruising speed, I had to keep it trimmed down to keep from porpoising. At full throttle, I was able to trim up and this 625# hull actually lifted pretty good. 45 mph was the top speed.

This winter I will make a Viper sized pad and try it again with the 80. I'll post pictures of the same run once done.

After this mod, I will pull the 80 and put on a 2.5L 150 EFI I picked up and see how it runs bolted to the transom.

After that run, I will need to get some $$ for solid mounts, LWP, jack plate, and sea star PRO steering.

Stay tuned for updates. I would like to see 75-80 mph and STABLE. If the boat handles the 150, I do have a 2.5L carb 200 powerhead I can throw on.

I had the big brother to that boat--CV16. It had an inline Merc but I wanted a V6. The dealer said, "I'll guarantee the V6 will stay on the transom but I won't guarantee the transom to stay on the boat." I did it anyway.

I was surprised to see the knee braces on this transom. Normally I wouldn't be fond of the foam, but in this instance, It adds support to the rear of the hull and it will only leave the heated garage a few times a year.
I have the '95 EFI 150 and a '01 200 carb powerhead to chose from.
I sure hope I can get this old girl to fly like the Viper. (Not bad for 45 mph with the 80 hp though.)

Very cool! I'll be following along with this build.

I've always liked the old Glastrons. My aunt and uncle have had a CVX-18 bow rider since I was a little kid. Love that old boat!

I've found when uploading pictures to this site directly you have to upload them in reverse order of how you want them to appear. I upload the finial picture in the series first, then work backwards. If that makes sense.

PS. What type of Mustang do I see in the background? I have a '13 Boss 302 for my go fast on land toy.

That’s my wife’s ‘05 GT salvage title. Added a Cervini hood and Shelby upper and lower side scoops, already had a saleen front bumper. I painted hertz “themed” stripes but 10” wide with pin stripes (like a 70’s GM ) then put Shelby badges. It lives in Sitka Alaska. An Island with 14 miles of road.

Our Go fast rigs are her ‘68 AMX / blown bbc & Powerglide and mine is a blown SBC ‘34 Ford 3 window coupe. Those rigs live in Washington with my Virage.

We do all our own work. Hobby fun. Still have day jobs.
Check the rest of our junk prattcustoms.com.

Can’t get pictures to load off my phone. Too big.

Sweet rides! With 17 miles of roads near you, you must be well known with those  Here's a shot of mine at an iconic cruise in spot in Minnesota. The business closed before I owned my car but the building was bought and moved to another property full of historic buildings. Its a venue site an a friend was just married there, couldn't pass the opportunity for a picture or two. Sorry for the derail, back to the boats! :boating:
