Looks to me like some really bad rotted core, but it's hard to tell from the picture. Is there another layer of glass, then rot, then the hull? If it is rotted core, you will be glad it is that bad. It sucks if it is half good. Hard to remove. If you can, do the bow and rear before the middle first. JMO. Bill

Don't panic, it will be replaced if done right. Bill

Your looking at a lot of grinding and Fiberglas work. Really that's the core that's rotten underneath the Fiberglas, you'll have to rip all the glass up and most probley just sweep the reminats of the core up. You can go to Chet's thread when he did his viper and see what his looked like and what it took to repair his

Since the previous owner was driving it I didn't think it was that bad but it NEEDS to be replaced. Like Bill said it will be a lot easier to remove since it is all rotten I would guess you can have it out in a weekend easy. My computer isn't playing nice but I will post a pic of a good core.

This is what is should look like. Granted this is new clean glass over the balsa but you get the point.

The top layer should rip out, then there will be a void where the core was stop there.

Ok, is there any less costly method to make it safe again or is about $1500 just what it takes?

That is a safe budget for the job, it can be done for a little less but if you plan for $1500 and only spend $1000 you are in a better position. It can be more if you start using composites and epoxy.

One thing to consider is after it's done you can put just about any power on it you want and be relatively safe.
