Layers of 1708 on transom

Post: # 23841Post blacknsilvr »

How many layers of 1708 is typically done on the inside of the transom? I have two layers on it now that both end way up in the wing. The ends are staggered as well. Also tabbed the bottom in with two layers. I also laid two layers of 1708 in before I bedded the transom. Those ends staggered as well. Should I add anymore to it before I continue on? I’m thinking/hoping that this will be enough, What do you guys think?

When I did mine, I put a layer of CSM then one layer of 1708 then my transom if I remember right. My outter skin was still pretty thick. I used 3 layer of 1/2 inch marine ply on mine.

Mine was what I considered to be thin, but I don’t have anything to compare it to. No other streams around me with the transom ground out. I went with 3 layers of 3/4 on mine bedding in with corebond thinking that would beef things up.

Thats a THICK transom! Factory is only 1 1/2 inches thick. Tire your stringers into the transom with some knees and you should have no issues with hanging anything you want on there.

I tend to overthink things, probably should’ve stuck to the 1.5, Oh well. I’ll drop in some braces and call it a day then.

Other than the extra weight of the extra layer of ply, its not going to hurt a single thing.

Are the two layers of 1708 enough on the outside (side facing bilge) of the transom?

I would say yes. Make sure first layup goes another 10 inches outside each side of the transom and the second 5 inches on each side. Maybe 7 inches and 5 inches, but something like that.

Cool. I’m throwing another layer on it just to make me feel better, then calling it a day. Thanks!!!
