I have the balsa bonded to the hull and have started glassing over it.
I am using the Isophathalic Fibreglass Resin (waterproof). My layup will be like:
1708
1.5 oz csm
1708
1.5 oz csm
13 oz woven
1.5 oz csm
hull
Written down it seems excessive.

Re: Recore question
When I did mine, I did a layer of 1.5 oz CSM on the hull, then a layer of 1708, then the core, then a layer of 1708 over the core. Unless you really ground down the hull, no need for all that. Cant say I have heard of Isophthalic resin myself. Everyone typically uses Poly or Epoxy resin.

Re: Recore question
Thats a lot of unnecessary materials.
1708
core
1708
csm (optional)
hull
Thats all ya need. Use some corebond or cabosil with the resin to make putty to smooth out any sharp edges so the fiberglass lays as smooth and flat as possible to avoid any possible air bubbles/pockets.
Like here when I did my transom. We used cabosil fibers mixed into the resin to make a putty to make for a nice smooth edge for the glass.

Re: Recore question
So I am about to begin on my viper. Prior to putting the balsa down do you seal the bottom face of the balsa with epoxy or do you just lay it dry on top of wet resin 1708? I have read about ATC Core-bond but is that necessary? Wouldn't the core bond to the wet 1708 just fine? .

Re: Recore question
I'll be honest, I dont remember how I did my Vulture. Its been like 8 years since I redid it. Sadly it still hasnt hit the water. This year though. I think we wet the hull real good and wet the back side of the core real good and laid it down. Could maybe use some thickened resin or corebond to eliminate any air gaps that might be between the hull and the core. Go take a look at Tonys (TNelson) VKing rebuild. Its a pretty well detailed build.
