1980 V-King restoration
Hello- I am restoring a 1980 V-King. I am doing the mechanical stuff myself and having the hull done by a professional. I want to do the bruiser paint scheme and we are having trouble finding the blue metal flake. Everything we have found is small metal flake and the color is too light. My painter mixed some samples but didn't look like pictures we have. Any suggestions on where to get the large blue metal flake and or how to mix it? Attached picture is what I'm looking for. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

Any good paint shop should be able to get big flake. Also, try Express Composites here in MN. They carry a bunch of different colors and sizes of flake. http://www.expresscomposites.com
Hope that helps. Post up pics of the boat. We all love pics around here.

Re: 1980 V-King restoration
I've been digging for a while to try and come up with large SQUARE metal flake like the factory laid. I'm planning to re gell my entire hull in the blue streak color scheme it came in originally. I'm hoping to make this thing look factory new.
Anyway, here's some of what I've come up with so far. Using my machinist dial calipers and measuring a few small chucks that have broke off the hull it looks like the factory laid .025" square flake, and possibly some .015" mixed in as well.
Roth Metal Flake has a bunch of color options and have large sizes, they just don't carry square flake. They also sell small sample sizes in little "crack baggies"(for lack of a better term lol) that are only a few dollars. I've ordered a few of these for color samples. It looks good color wise I just can't get over the shape of a hexagon flake, I don't think it matches the factory correctly. At least not to my liking.
Roth's website: https://rothmetalflake.com
The only place I've found so far who carries large sizes of square flake is Vintage Paint. It looks like this is going to be the ticket for me. They sadly don't offer sample sizes but you can order pretty small sizes for like $10. I've messaged them on FB a few times and seems like they're willing to work with pictures and such to get a good color match.

Good luck and let us know what you find.

Thanks, for the info. I'll post some pics soon. Will also have additional questions once the shop is done with fiberglass and I start the mechanics.

Re: 1980 V-King restoration
Thanks again for all the input. I found the Blue flake that looks really close to original. It’s the Western Blue .025 square flake from vintage paint. Great tip thanks! I’m now ordering my windshield. I have the frame but windshield is cut due to crack. I found what looks to be an exact replacement at UPD plastics but they can only confirm replacement for Hydro Stream 1973 17ft Vector, Hydro Stream 1978 17ft Vector, Hydro Stream 1979 18ft V King, Hydro Stream 1980 15 ft Viper, Hydro Stream 1983 18 ft V King, Hydro Stream 1984 18ft V King, Hydro Stream 1986 17ft V King YT. Since I have a 1980 V King Does anyone know if the windshield is different from 79 to 80 or any of the other years? I have always thought the windshield was the same for all years.[ Post made via iPad ]

Re: 1980 V-King restoration
The windshield are all the same for the Viper, Vector, V-King, and Vulture. All years, nothing changed. For example, a windshield from a 77 Viper will fit on an 83 V-King. Im sure when people were ordering they gave them their year so they just added it to the list that it fits.
Look at the bottom of the page - https://www.hydrostreamforums.com/hydrostream-windshields
Note: I have another source for a windshield that is half the price of the UPD ones. I'll be posting the info in the next few days.
Looking great so far!

Re: 1980 V-King restoration
Thanks again...UPD cost is $450 so if you have a source that cost almost half, I’m in. Always looking to save a few bucks.
