New project- 89 Voyager

Post: # 25042Post alaskastreamin »

Caprice and I decided to get a Voyager for the hanging at the beach outings.

We found this one in Bemidji, MN. Got it from the son of the original owner.
Was advertised as mint gelcoat and butter soft upholstery.

21 hr run each way over to get it. Kid was trying to be honest. gel cracks all over rear deck and back of sponsons. ( black) not a good gel color. Gets too hot and cracks.

The upholstery was soft except for the small holes and the lower edge where it was hard and brittle. Oh and the plywood frames were either broken or rotten... the fiberglass bucket seat shells had busted arm rests so they were reglassed..

Yea,... not as advertised... oh well, what do you expect for $4000?

Got it home and pulled the rotten floor out. Was surprised to find golden core everywhere!!!
No spared resin on this layup..

The stern eyes were sucked in the transom so it was removed. The plywood was still golden but was wet!!!.

I found a great deal on a 300 ProMax so that’s what’s going on the back. Adding another layer of plywood to the layup.

Waiting on the core bonding putty.....

Ok, let’s see if I can get the rest of the pictures to load.

Pulled the bilge pump base and ground off black gel and golden core!!! I’ll glass over this area and glue the base down..

Yes, that’s the one.

The original transom used three layers of 1/2” plywood with mat between each layer.
Since I will keep the splashwell for rigging hose clearance when fully tilted up, I will add a 4th layer of 1/2” plywood. The last layer ( furthest forward) will have the veneer grain running vertical.

I’ll pre- fit the gas tank & battery box and put stainless T- nuts under the floor for secure fastening.

My fiberglass rep says black gelcoat is a disaster on a boat.
When it heats up, the fiberglass expands more than the gelcoat can.
Luckily this will be a garage queen so it won’t see a lot of heat.

I got the bilge area gel coated and the plywood primed this morning.

I’m waiting on the color chart to get the right shade. The middle gray is a bugger to match.

I’m thinking the Whisper 1900 is the light and the dark gray 1906 is the dark. It’s the middle ones that just aren’t dead on using my phone screen against the hull.

I do have firecracker red 1300 and that looks right....

John Tiger said the later models got more resin due to come backs.

This one is definitely chopper gun built.
The top of the transom and inside of splashwell are around 5/8”-3/4” thick!!

I got my fiberglass order in ( minus the color chart arrggg)

Got the new transom plywood primed and puttied in place.

Last couple days I got the transom laid up, floor down and glassed in, new seat boxes made and glassed the inside of the boxes. I refit the gas tank and put T-nuts under the floor .
