Re: ‘89 HST rebuild ( Blown out bottom)
Yesterday I spent 7 hours wet sanding the clear with 600 then 1500. I let that sit “open” overnight to off-gas.
Today I spent 8 hours buffing.
Super duty 3M with a wool pad
Regular 3M compound and wool pad
6” random orbit with “The chemical guys “ # 32& 34 micro finishing compounds.
Tomorrow will be # 36 & 38 optical grade polishing cream.
It’s overkill for the hull but I gotta stay busy while it firms up enough to set back on the trailer.
In the 4th picture down, in the tunnel, you can see my repair is smoother than the factory. Lol….

Re: ‘89 HST rebuild ( Blown out bottom)
Well good. That was the plan. Lol!!
New drain plugs were put in. The center one was a challenge as the rolled edge isn’t on a flat ( square) surface. It’s in an arched area and the tube had to be scribed, cut and a rolled lip fabricated to fit perfectly flush.
While rolling it back over, I got pour foam put down both sides.I had to pour the foam thru a funnel , down a 6’ stainless pipe to reach the bow area. As soon as I was done pouring, I stuck a piece of paper in the tube and shoved it down with a 6’ rod to clean out the tube before it started to expand.
Back on the trailer and a couple coats of thickened gelcoat spread over the deck where I ground out the spider cracked gel.

Re: ‘89 HST rebuild ( Blown out bottom)
Got the putty sanded out, windscreen fitted, gelcoat ( primer) sprayed on.
The rear deck was pretty wavy. I hit it with the inline sanding board till the gelcoat got thin. I threw on a couple coats of white gel to fill in the slight low areas.
With it being black, I want this area as flat as possible.
Finally done with dusty, nasty work.
Wet sand tomorrow and start masking.

Re: ‘89 HST rebuild ( Blown out bottom)
Dehydrated, no documents found, to my knowledge. ( wink).
I had the shop heat down a bit and the gel I sprayed yesterday hadn’t fully kicked. I scuffed the surface and let it off gas this morning and spent a couple hours blowing out the interior, vacuuming, and masking off the inside. Aluminum foil duct work tape sticks to area’s normal masking tape won’t. I used it to cover gauge holes and speaker openings.
By mid afternoon, the gel was sanding “clean” as it wasn’t gumming up my paper.
Got the rear “wings” flat and started working up the left side.
You can see thru the white gel where the highs and lows were.
It’s flat now and should look awesome in black.
Should finish sanding tomorrow and get back on track.

Re: ‘89 HST rebuild ( Blown out bottom)
Thanks Kevin!!
Spent half of the day block sanding the deck getting all the waves flattened out. The other half was spent masking it off for the black.
The front deck “triangle” was very time consuming. It’s not straight lines. I had to make a template from the right side to get my marks for the left.
Too late to spray it tonight so in the morning it will be.
