Re: 1980 Viper Rebirth
Friday March 2nd, 2018:
Well, apologies for my severe slacking the past few months. December and January were brutally cold....heating my garage was impossible. Even with a propane salamander, I couldn't get it warmer than -5C (23F).
Then February came, and the house I'm living in started undergoing renovations. Painters, drywallers, etc. No room to work. Everything was stored in the garage...around my boat...in my boat...
But now March is here...the renovations are done, and more seasonal temperatures are forecasted.
I spent a few hours this evening grinding down the transom more and finally got that section done.
On the to-do list this weekend:
More grinding. I still have thick "seams" (is what I would call them) where the float boxes were glassed in to grind off, and I need to smooth out and flatten the sides of the transom.
The bottom end of the pad also needs to be squared off and cleaned up. A 5" brazed cup wheel is just too large to grind the edges down precisely (as you can see by the nice radius I carved) so I'll have to use my Dremel there.

Re: 1980 Viper Rebirth
Sunday March 4th, 2018:
Went out today and bought an oscillating tool with a Christmas gift card I got, and finished up the transom, and the sections on either side of it. Also ground out the last little bit of the pad area and squared off the edges for its pending balsa core layup. For the really tight edges/corners, I used my Dremel. It's slow, but its precise.
Hopefully this week I'll get the float box seams ground off up both sides, and the black gelcoat up in the bow removed as well.

Your work looks great!! Your transom and core will fit into place much easier. Nice progress!

Re: 1980 Viper Rebirth
Tues/Wed/Fri March 6-9th, 2018:
Spent a few hours each a few nights this week working on grinding down the sides of the hull, and when I finished that I dug out the bow eye ring. Pics speak for themselves.
While I was taking a break from grinding I knocked out this large chunk of foam from the port wing of the deck suspended above me.
Why am I not surprised?
All that's left to grind out is that small section in the forward pad area, and the remnants around the bow eye.
I'll get that cleaned up tomorrow morning, give the hull a good vacuum with my Dirt Devil and acetone wipe-down.
Then start my shopping list of materials.

Saturday March 10th, 2018:
Finished grinding out the bow eye triangle.
Then the rest of the pad.
The only spot that I accidentally ground through. I was working one edge of my grinder and not paying attention to where the other edge was. Easily fixable.
And done!! Finally.
And this concludes the hull deconstruction portion of my rebuild.

Re: 1980 Viper Rebirth
Looks awesome! Now to start going the other way. Trust me, that goes a lot faster than the demo.

Re: 1980 Viper Rebirth
I'm only seeing an "X IMAGE" where the pictures would be.

Working for me...(I use Firefox), and checked with Chrome (as images wouldn't be cached since I never use Google's spy browser) and they load up fine too.

Re: 1980 Viper Rebirth
I switched to Chrome and still no pictures. Tried my I-phone and just gray void areas where pictures would be. I'll figure it out.
I apologize for derailing this thread....
EDIT:
I can see everything from apple laptop at home.
